How much does a website cost in Australia?

How much does a website cost in Australia is the first thing most small business owners type, and the answers are all over the place because the question hides three different products. A do it yourself builder, a freelancer or small studio, and a full agency are selling different things at different prices, and all three call it a website.

This page lays the three out honestly, including where we sit. We only quote our own prices as exact figures. Everyone else's are ranges, because they change with every quote.

Do it yourself on a builder

Free or cheap to start, then a monthly fee for as long as the site exists, usually more once you want your own domain and no builder branding. The real cost is your weekends, and the site that never quite gets finished.

A freelancer or small studio

One off quotes that mostly land in the hundreds to the low thousands for a small business site. Quality varies more than price does. Ask to see live sites on your own phone before you decide.

An agency

Starts in the thousands and climbs with every page, workshop and revision round. Worth it when you need photography, a brand, copywriting and software in one place. Most small businesses do not.

Five things that change any website quote

Pages

Most quotes grow with page count. A home page, a services page and a contact page is a small site. A page for every service you offer is a bigger one, and usually worth it, because each page can show up on Google on its own.

Photos

Your own phone photos of real jobs are free and often better than stock. Professional photography is a separate cost and only worth it for premium services where the look is the product.

Words

Copywriting is where many quotes quietly double. We write the pages from what you tell us in your own words, as part of the price.

Bookings, quotes and stock

A booking calendar, an online quote form that follows up by text, or stock and ordering behind the counter are software, not pages. We quote those per job as business tools.

Ongoing fees

Ask every quote what happens next month. Hosting, security, updates and a domain held in someone else's name are where cheap builds get expensive.

$1,000, full custom

Designed from nothing, however you want it, with a page for each service so each one can be found on its own. Every page written in your words.

Optional care from $20 a month

Hosting, backups, security and a person to email. Only if you want it. You keep the site either way.

Fix or rebuild

When $250 is enough and when it is not

If the site is basically sound and one thing has gone wrong, a fix is the right money. A mobile layout that broke, a slow page, an expired certificate, an old year in the footer. If the site is a five year old builder page with the wrong phone number, no services pages and a logo as the only image, a fix is money spent on something you will replace in a year. Rebuild it from a template instead and keep the extra $250 for a photographer.

Design is how it looks, development is making it work. Small business quotes usually bundle both. The price only separates when a site needs real software behind it, such as bookings, stock or a customer portal, and that is quoted per job rather than as part of the website.

Are there ongoing costs after the site is built?
Your domain, roughly $15 to $20 a year, paid by you. Optional site care from $20 a month for hosting, backups and updates. Nothing else, and no lock in. You keep the site either way.
How does paying work?
You see a free mockup of your own site first. Once you approve it, a 25% deposit starts the build, the site is built and put live, and the rest is due when it is live and you are happy with it.
